Homeopathy for Morning Sickness
Pregnancy is a time of incredible changes for you and your baby, and eventually you will experience the wonder of your little one kicking, hiccupping and generally making her or his presence known.
Because of all this change in the woman’s body, there can be symptoms that arise during pregnancy. Many of these are mild discomforts that are manageable, but if your symptoms are getting severe, especially morning sickness, life can go from discomfort to sheer misery, especially if you need to get to work in a moving car or on the bus, which can be a big nausea trigger for many expecting mamas!
Before you resort to drugs such as Diclectin, you may be interested to know that there are so many homeopathic, natural remedies that can help. Homeopathic medicines are gentle and natural treatments for morning sickness. They have been used safely by midwives and homeopaths for 200 years.
There are over 100 morning sickness remedies that can be used for nausea and morning sickness, so although health food stores often recommend over-the-counter options, your best bet is to have a consultation with a professional homeopath who can also assess your overall state of health and match your specific symptoms to a remedy. The treatment takes into consideration your emotional state and any current stresses as well, and the correct remedy will benefit you and your baby.
An individualized homeopathic medicine tends to be much more effective than ‘home remedies’ such as ginger and sour candies.
To give you an idea of the individuality of the homeopathic medicines used for morning sickness, I’ll highlight a few examples – but please don’t try to self-prescribe based on this information as it’s not sufficient:
Pulsatilla - for nausea and vomiting that goes with a very weepy and needy emotional state. The symptoms get worse after eating or drinking, worse in the morning, for being hot or in a stuffy room, and for eating rich or fatty foods.
Sepia – for nausea and vomiting that is worse in the morning, worse after eating, for milk, and often accompanied by a headache and an empty, sinking feeling in the stomach. This remedy is also useful for weepiness with irritability and wanting to be alone, especially in moms who feel overwhelmed and often for moms who are exhausted from caring for other children while pregnant.
Tabacum – for morning sickness relief from nausea and vomiting that feels worse on motion, in a car, worse for stuffy air, and feels worse before breakfast. There are no strong emotional symptoms associated with this nausea.
Colubrina – a morning sickness remedy that is indicated for nausea that is constant, with vomiting, and a lot of salivation. The nausea is worse after eating, and the person feels very chilly, better for catching up on sleep and lying down, for hot drinks. Emotionally they feel irritable, angry, and exhausted. It may be indicated in women who are working too hard or have many stresses during their pregnancy.
This is a very partial list – there are morning sickness remedies for nausea that lasts all day, for morning sickness that is better from eating little bits, or feels worse bending over, and for nausea with violent and frequent vomiting, and the list goes on.
I offer safe and effective natural treatment for morning sickness that tends to help on other levels as well, especially if you are under stress or feeling emotional changes. Homeopathic medicine does not interact with any other medication you may be taking. Please call me for more information about how homeopathic medicine can help with your morning sickness. 613-296-2937. Information about my consultations can be found here.
Although Diclectin is generally considered safe, it is contra-indicated for many people. Mild side effects for Diclectin may include: confusion, difficulty sleeping, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, and diarrhea.  Serious side effects for which you would need medical attention include convulsions, pounding heartbeat, stomach pain, and trouble with urinary flow. It was almost taken off the market in the ’80′s because parents were concerned it was causing birth defects. There is some research to suggest it does not result in increased birth defects, but why take the risk? Homeopathic remedies do not interact with drugs, have never been shown to cause birth defects and have no side effects.
