Frequently Asked Questions

How is homeopathy different from naturopathy?

A Naturopath is like a General Practitioner; they learn several types of natural medicine such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, herbal medicine, and homeopathy.

Homeopaths specialize in one type of natural medicine. It takes many years of study to become proficient in homeopathic prescribing.  Homeopathy is a unique system of medicine that uses plants, minerals and other substances in very diluted forms to stimulate the immune system. It is over 200 years old and was developed by a German physician and chemist named Samuel Hahnemann. Homeopathy is based on the principal of similar cures - a substance which causes certain symptoms in a healthy person will cure the same symptoms in a sick person.

For example,  slicing an onion causes the eyes to water and the nose to run. The homeopathic preparation of Allium cepa (red onion) is often used to treat cold and hay fever symptoms when they match those caused by onion.

This is a very simplified example. Homeopaths need to do a very detailed case taking to understand the whole person, the symptoms at the physical, mental and emotional level, in order to find the best 'match' for that person. So homeopathy is tailored uniquely to you.  If 5 people have hay fever, they might need five different remedies, because each person is unique in temperament and medical history.

What are homeopathic remedies?

Homeopathic remedies are therapeutically active micro doses of plant, mineral and other biological substances. They may come in pellet or liquid form. They are manufactured according to the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of Europe and the United States, and regulated by Health Canada.

Unlike many natural supplements, homeopathic remedies are very inexpensive and do not need to be taken in large doses. In fact a central principle of homeopathy is to give 'the minimum dose' required for healing.

Remedies are prepared in a manner unique to homeopathy. The original extract of plant, animal or other substance is diluted repeatedly and succussed (vigorously shaken) with each dilution. After many rounds of dilution and succussion, it has been found that remedies become very potent medicinally, with no side effects.  This is called 'potentization' and is the hallmark of homeopathic remedies. It makes them substantially different from any other natural supplements.

What can homeopathy treat?

Because homeopaths treat the whole person, based on symptoms and history and temperament, any condition can be treated with homeopathy.

It is especially beneficial where no conventional diagnosis or treatment is available, as for many sufferers of chronic pain, for example.  There are many medical conditions that can only be treated by palliation with drugs such as painkillers, anti-inflammatories, antidepressants, etc., which over the long term can cause other health problems.

Many women's health issues such as infertility, endometriosis, absent, heavy or painful menses, fibroids and cysts can be treated effectively. Hormone imbalances respond well to homeopathic treatment. For many women there is also an emotional side to illness perhaps stemming from trauma, that can be taken into consideration and the root causes of the illness are healed.

Conditions such as anxiety, depression, phobias and sleep disorders can also be treated holistically with homeopathy. Each remedy presents a picture with physical, emotional, and mental symptoms.

Are homeopathic remedies safe for children?

Homeopathic medicines are completely non-toxic and very diluted, very safe for infants, children, pregnant and nursing mothers.  They are ideal for complaints of pregnancy because drugs and many herbal remedies are not safe for use.

Is homeopathy known in other parts of the world?

Homeopathy is used in 65 countries, it is well established in European nations such as the UK,  France, and Germany.  The World Health Organization ranks homeopathy as the second most popular therapy in the world. WHO has recommended its integration with medical systems worldwide.

Do I have to choose between homeopathy and my current medical care?

No - I consider homeopathy to be a complementary healing practice, and I recommend that you continue to see your family doctor regularly, for any tests or diagnoses that may be required.  A homeopath will  take into consideration any tests results that you have obtained and discuss treatment options with you.

Homeopathic remedies are very safe and do not interfere with other medications you may be taking. You should not stop taking prescribed medication except with the advice of your MD. You can still obtain homeopathic treatment while taking medication and as your condition improves you may be able to wean off medication in consultation with your MD.
